Reflexology

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a natural non-invasive therapy that dates back thousands of years to ancient Egypt. It is known today as the modernized science of stress relief and healing.

There are over 7000 nerve endings in each foot which correspond to all organs, glands and parts of the body. When a reflexologist applies the unique method of gentle thumb and finger pressure on these reflex areas, it increases the blood and nerve supply to the corresponding organ or part of the body, giving it what it needs to function in a balanced state, thus improving general health and well-being.

If you are in need of stress relief, relaxation, pain relief, or are targeting a specific ailment or condition, reflexology can be your solution!

Why Reflexology?

Could you benefit from taking time for yourself to relax, reduce stress from your busy life, or even receive healing support for a health condition? If so... reflexology can help.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that is deeply relaxing and takes you from your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) to your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and repair). This allows the body to use its own innate natural ability to heal itself.

Over time, stress, anxiety, injury, disease and other factors cause imbalances in the body's natural ability to function optimally. By allowing the body to improve communication and reduce blockages in energy flow, the entire body can be treated using only the reflexes in the feet and hands! Reflexology is a valuable modality which encourages the body to re-establish balance and thus, heal itself with no adverse side effects.

*Please note: Reflexologists do not diagnose, prescribe or treat specific conditions. Reflexology should never be regarded as a replacement for professional medical advice.

After a brief health questionnaire, I begin by using relaxation techniques followed by the unique reflexology method on one foot, then the other, and I may go back to target specific areas of concern. Reflexology is a safe and non-invasive therapy. No tools are used during the treatment.

The International Institute of Reflexology

Reflexologists certified in the Original Ingham Method are trained professionals who belong to the International Institute of Reflexology, a highly regarded and globally recognized entity. Members are held to a high Standard of Practice and professional Code of Conduct and must complete continuing education and renew memberships annually in order to keep their status. When choosing a Reflexology Therapist, look for a Certified I.I.R. practitioner to ensure you (and your feet!) are in the best hands.

  • In 1913, William H. Fitzgerald, M.D. (1872-1942), an ear, nose, and throat specialist, and accompanied by Dr. Edwin Bowers introduced reflexology to North America.   At the time, he showed that applying pressure had an anesthetic effect on another area.

  • Reflexology was further developed by Eunice D. Ingham (1899-1974), a nurse and physiotherapist, in the 1930s and 1940s.  Ingham found that the feet and hands were especially sensitive, and then mapped the entire body into "reflexes" on the feet.
